The next morning, I definitely felt the effects of two glasses of bourbon, but two big glasses of water and some coffee got me moving for the opening shift at the store. Given that the dogs had been tucked away at the house all evening with no company, they were eager to meet and greet on our walk in. Their motivations and mine were unfortunately mismatched since all I wanted to do was avoid everyone, but the pups were persistent. So I slapped on my best “good to see you but don’t talk to me grin” that I usually reserved for plane rides and let them greet everyone.

By the time we reached the store, all three of us were tired, but unlike the dogs, I couldn’t just go curl up on a soft pillow and sleep the day away. We only had one more day until the recycling event, and I needed to be sure we were spreading the word. Mom was coming by this morning to help me check that we had all the supplies ready, thank goodness. I definitely needed her help.

Plus, Dad, Walter, and Woody were on their way over to get their construction plans for Sunday all laid out. Between their presence, the need to plan this big event, and the usual Friday rush, it was going to be all I could do to make it through the day. Fortunately, I had my date with Jared to look forward to, and since Mart had already left town, I was hoping to cut out early, clean up the house, and get most of the meal ready to cook before he came.

Then, I had this little fantasy of us cooking together for a bit before enjoying a quiet night in the backyard. In fact, I was so deep in my imagining as I checked the supplies at the front counter that I was a little surprised when I looked up at the sound of a knock and saw Jared smiling at me.

As I walked over to let him in, I tried to temper my smile, but when I saw how happy he looked as he leaned over and kissed my cheek, I decided that playing it cool wasn’t necessary here and let my giddiness shine through. “It’s so good to see you,” I said as I reached up to hug him.

“Now, that’s my kind of greeting,” he said before sighing. “I only wish seeing you was the only reason I was here.”

I echoed his sigh. “Me, too, but our personal lives aren’t the only things we have going on. You’ve got news about,” I looked around as if someone might hear in the still empty store, “what we discussed last night.”

“I do,” he said. “Have a minute?” He took my hand and kissed it, and for a second, I felt the burden of all that had happened lift.

“Sure. Chocolate milk okay?” I said as I led him toward the café. “I’m not sure I’m up for brewing coffee just yet.
